The Finished Product

Things you need:

Paper Image

Photoshop which I hope you have :)

Step 1 – Background

Create a new document I used the size 600px by 500px with a 100 dpi. Take the Gradient tool and set it to Radial Gradient, I used the forground colour #5e5000 and the background colour as Black. Drag from the top of the document to the bottom while using the Gradient tool and holding shift to get a striaght line.

img_2

Now take the Paper Texture that you have downloaded and Resize to fit the size of the document and place Over the top of the Gradient Layer. Change the Blending Mode of the Paper Texture to Multiply and I set the Opacity to 70% – 80% but this is dependant on how strong you want the texture to come through.

Step 2 – The Text

Now you need to create a New Layer fill this in with Black, next create some text I chose to type Flame Text as it was relevant to this tutorial but type whatever you wish to. Make sure the colour of this text is White.

img_3

Duplicate the text layer you have just created, hide the original text layer. With this new text layer Rotate it 90 degrees to the Right . Go to Effects – Stylize – Wind make sure the wind is going from left to right click ok, a message will pop up saying you need to rasterize the text click ok. We want to do this effect one or two more times depending on how strong you want your flames so hit Ctrl & F to do this. Once happy with this we need to blur it a little bit so that the flames arent so strong, now go to Effects – Blur – Gaussian Blur and have a strenght of about 2 .

img_4

Now Mege this Rasterized Text with the Black Layer that you did earleir, we now want to create the wavy effects that flames have so go to Effects – Liquify (this option may be under a sub menu in Effects in an ealeir version of Photoshop than CS4) once there we want to have the settings as shown below, the Brush Size 25, Brush Density 25 and Brush Pressure 50. Take the brush tool and wiggle from the top of the text to the top of the flame.

Step 3 – Adding Colour

img_5

We want to add some colour to the text now, Duplicate the layer you have just liquified with the original layer name it Yellow Text, name the copy Red Text hide this layer go back to your Yellow Text Layer then go to Edit – Adjustments – Hue/Saturation with this dialog box open change the settings as shown below. Make sure Colorize is clicked in both these steps.

img_6

Once done go to the Red Text Layer make it visible then go to Edit – Adjustments – Hue/Saturation with this dialog box open change the settings as shown below.

img_7

Once done go to the Red Text Layer and change the layer Mode to Color Dodge. You can now Right Click on the layer and select Merge Down . Go back to the original text you made that you didnt add any effects to, take this and place it above all the other layers for the moment, with this layer hold Ctrl + Click the layer this will make a selection around the text, Create a new Layer now with the Gradient Tool set to Linear GradientI used a forground colour of #f2c400 and a background colour of #a36205 with the Gradient Tool make a gradient from the top of your selection to the bottom.

Now time to and some Styles to this layer double click on this layer and apply the Styles as shown below. The colours used are #ee6a00 and #ec0606.

Almost done with this part, Hide the none Rasterized Text Layer take the layer you where just adding styles to and drag it below the flame layer, now make Selection of this layer as before Crtl + Click the layer and with the Flamed Text Layer Selected click on the mask tool. After this with the mask selected press Crtl + I to invert the selection, the text layer underneath should now be visible.

With the mask selected take the Smudge Tool and start smudging over the the text to make it look like the flames are coming around the text. Below is how your layers should look by now and the image.

How to get rid of that black background so we can see the lovely background you created at the beginning well with the Flame Text Layer selected just change the layer style to Screen an its done.

Stage 4 – The Reflection

The last stage being the reflection take the Flame Text Layer and the Text Layer, Duplicate them and Merge them. then drag this layer below the Text Layer, Free Transform this layer Ctrl + T and flip Verticaly.

img_12

Then I changed the Opacity to about 25% but what ever suites you really and make a Mask with a Gradient going form the top (which was the bottom) of the text to the bottom (which was the top).

Finally to add a bit of depth and to make it look like the text is sitting on something make an Ovel Shape with either the Selection Tool or Shape Tool (on a new layer if using the selection tool) fill with black and then go Blur – Gaussian Blur I used a strenght of 25.
